In order to secure numbers for your student trips, it’s important to market your trip efficiently and intentionally. Come along as we explore a few tips for ensuring students and parents are excited and invested in your upcoming trip!
TIME THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF YOUR TRIP
Sharing the news of your trip is a big deal! Consider timing the announcement of your trip to coincide with something already exciting, such as students attending Band Camp! Energy will be high and students are more likely to be invested in the trip on the heels of an event related to their area of focus. Of course, be sure your announcement timing also gives parents enough time for decision making, fundraising and allow ample opportunities for asking questions.
CONSIDER SOME DIGITAL MARKETING OPTIONS
Digital marketing platforms can do a lot of the heavy lifting for you when it comes to marketing and managing the interest in your trip. Consider creating a Google form to track a list of interested students, and consider setting up a trip-specific landing page or webpage with dates, benefits, pricing, deadlines, and an FAQ section. Stay in touch with parents by using email marketing platforms (like Mailchimp) to share any updates and reminders.
COMMUNICATE THE BENEFITS OF THE TRIP
Travel is an invaluable tool in broadening a student’s worldview and perspectives. Be sure to communicate with parents the social and educational benefits of trips like the one you’re planning and how they can assist in college and career readiness, cultural competency, and the development of leadership skills. Travel can also enhance college essays and applications, in addition to potentially influencing a student’s passion for their future careers.
MAKE THE FINANCIALS CLEAR
Knowing that finances are most often the top barrier preventing students from experiencing the magic of travel, make costs and payment timelines clear to parents as early as possible. It’s also wise to discuss fundraising options and suggestions, from hosting bake sales, car washes, etc. Don’t be afraid to get creative, either! Approach local businesses or past donors to see if they’re interested in donating or sponsoring a student’s trip, or consider offering payment installations. Additionally, encourage students to apply for available educational travel scholarships, like those from the SYTA Youth Foundation.
